Patients today are seeking a more technically advanced treatment for facial lines and texture without the lengthy downtime of traditional ablative procedures. Cutera’s introduction of Pearl™ with proprietary YSGG technology with a brand new wavelength of 2790nm provides this optimal balance between cosmetic benefit and patient downtime.

Patients today do not have the luxury of downtime and they want to see results quickly. Pearl really answers this need. Pearl is an ideal treatment for all ages (25+), female or male. Pearl is unique because all patients will see results after one Pearl treatment and just 3 to 4 days of social downtime. Patients with moderate to severe sun damage will benefit from two treatments, spaced one month apart.
During treatment, a portion of the epidermis is removed. There is simultaneous thermal injury to all or part of the remaining epidermis. This creates a natural protective dressing on the skin to minimize downtime during the restorative process.

What is the Pearl procedure?

The Pearl procedure combines the impact of resurfacing lasers with the gentleness and safety of non-invasive procedures to treat aging and sun-damaged skin. Pearl reduces wrinkles, uneven texture and solar damage with fewer treatments and less overall recovery than other technologies to provide a healthy, pearl-like glow.

During a Pearl treatment, the top layer of the skin is treated with pulses of laser. A portion of the epidermis (skin surface) is gently removed and a natural protective dressing is formed on the skin’s surface. Most patients feel a series of brief pinches during the treatments. After 3-4 days, the protective dressing peels off revealing new, healthy, vibrant skin underneath.

The Pearl laser replaces the entire top sun-damaged layer of skin with new healthy skin. Simultaneously, it sends heat to deeper layers of the skin stimulating new collagen growth, filling out and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. New collagen growth continues for 4 to 6 weeks post-treatment. The combination of new skin and decreased wrinkles results in a healthier, more youthful appearance.

Unlike “fractional” treatments, Pearl treats the entire face, minimizing the number of required treatments. Typically, only 1-2 treatments are necessary to renew your skin.

In a short time, patients will notice overall skin clarity, smoothness and softness – all from a 15 to 30 minute treatment with only 3 – 4 days of “social” downtime.

What is “social” downtime?

Downtime is the time spent recovering from a procedure. With “social” downtime, you can continue your normal daily activities. However, you may not wish to attend important social events because your face will appear swollen, pink/red and flaky for 3 – 4 days.

What can I do to prepare for this treatment?

Preparation for Pearl treatment is relatively straightforward and aimed at conditioning the skin for the treatment. The preparation is more targeted towards improving and decreasing the recovery period and optimising results. Dr Beaini is likely to prescribe you a prescription cream for this. If you have a history of cold sores, you may be required to commence an antiviral medication just prior to the procedure.

How does a Pearl treatment feel?

The Pearl treatment feels like a series of brief pinches. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 representing pain, most patients report the treatment feeling like a 2 or 3. A topical anaesthetic is used to provide a comfortable treatment experience.

When will I see results?

Results are noticeable by day 3 or 4 when the superficial tissue has peeled off, leaving fresh, new, healthy skin underneath. Downtime with the Pearl Laser is quicker and easier than other skin resurfacing procedures. When the sun damaged layers of skin are treated, the body responds by forming a natural dressing over the area, which peels off after about 4 days to reveal new, rejuvenated skin. Initial results can be seen within a week; substantial results are evident after two. After peeling and healing is complete, rejuvenated skin will be revealed. It will be smoother and brighter and generally more attractive.

Are there any restrictions and what aftercare is required after Pearl treatment?

After treatment, the skin will look and feel mildly sunburned. You will be required to frequently soak your face with a vinegar and water solution and then apply an ointment such as vasoline or paw paw on the skin for 3 – 4 days. For your convenience, Zinc Clinic will provide you with a post care kit for this period. Since you can not wear sunscreen during this time, you will need to wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure for a few days after the treatment. Once, healing is complete, you may be advised to purchase a skin care kit specifically designed to further aid with healing. Make-up may be applied at this time. To prolong the results you have achieved, a medical grade skin care regime will be recommended and tailored to your needs.

How many treatments are recommended?

Some patients may require two treatments spaced approximately one month apart to achieve the desired results. Most patients usually require only one treatment. Further treatments are typically repeated every 6 months to 2 years.

Can Pearl be part of a combination therapy treatment?

Yes, patients may choose to have a Pearl treatment followed by separate visits for 3D Skin Rejuvenation, Titan, or injectables. Pearl treatment is often combined with Limelight/IPL to better target pigmentation or Pearl fractional laser to address deeper wrinkles. You can discuss combination therapies with Dr Beaini at consultation.

How does Pearl compare to other laser treatments?

Pearl offers the most effective treatment to address fine lines, uneven texture and discolouration without the complicated and prolonged wound care and the lengthy downtime required with certain Erbium and CO2 laser procedures. Compared to today’s fractionated technologies, Pearl offers noticeable results in just one treatment versus 4 – 6 fractionated treatments as is necessary with other laser platforms.
