Leading cosmetic laser provider, Cutera, has introduced its newest treatment concept. Pearl Fusion combines both the Pearl Resurfacing and Pearl Fractional lasers, with no other technology delivering the same clinical result and patient experience.

The demand for laser treatments in Australia outstrips that of other countries, largely due to the greater skin damage and earlier ageing caused by our constant exposure to the sun. This explains why today’s Australians are seeking a more effective treatment for facial lines and texture – without the lengthy downtime of traditional ablative procedures. Cutera’s Pearl Fusion delivers the optimal balance between cosmetic benefit and patient downtime.

Pearl Fusion is a new combination laser treatment consisting of Pearl Fractional (fractional ablative technology) and Pearl Resurfacing (full-epidermal renewal). No other technology can deliver the same single treatment results and patient experience.

Pearl Fusion is a new generation of laser technology that reaches beyond CO² and Erbium. Pearl Resurfacing and Pearl Fractional are based on Cutera’s proprietary 2790 nm wavelength using YSGG technology.

Together, Pearl Fusion offers a unique solution for treating deep wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin texture, pore size, pigmentation and sun damage.

How does Pearl Fusion work?

Most patients benefit from a full-face Pearl Resurfacing treatment for total skin quality and overall appearance of the skin; however, Pearl Fractional targets areas of significant photo damage.

Pearl Resurfacing renews the skin’s entire surface and stimulates new collagen. This treatment reduces fine lines, smooths uneven texture, repairs sun damage, reduces discolouration and gives the skin an overall glow.

Pearl Fractional treats deeper into the dermis and is effective on deep wrinkles around difficult-to-treat areas including the lip, eyes and cheeks.

Combining these two modalities allow practitioners to tailor a treatment for the specific condition of the patient.

For example, if the patient has epidermal issues (brown spots, uneven colour/texture), Pearl does very well. But for dermal issues, Pearl Fractional is effective because it is a deeper penetrating laser.

Typically, only one Pearl Fusion treatment session is required, followed by approximately five days of social downtime. Compared to other treatment options, Pearl Fusion offers the ideal balance of ablation and thermal effect. This leads to collagen stimulation and a more refreshed, younger-looking appearance.

Both Pearl Resurfacing and Pearl Fractional have a high safety record. Dr Beaini will recommend post-care treatment following the procedures to minimize the possibility of adverse effects. It is important to follow these instructions.

What is Pearl Fusion?

Pearl Fusion is a combination of the Pearl Resurfacing and Pearl Fractional technologies. Pearl Resurfacing provides full epidermal renewal, improving pigment texture, pore size and fine lines. Pearl Fractional provides fractional ablative treatments for deep wrinkles and sun damage – plumping and firming the skin to create a more youthful look. Together, these treatments offer a unique solution for deep and full coverage.

How does Pearl Fractional work?

The Pearl Fractional laser uses heat to create tiny holes deep in the skin. The process removes sun damaged tissue and then stimulates growth of healthy, new skin, full of fresh collagen. The skin is plumped up from underneath resulting in a fuller, smoother appearance; at the same time, there is significant improvement in sun damage as well as other skin imperfections such as wrinkles, volume loss and skin laxity.

How does the Pearl Resurfacing work?

The top layer of the skin (epidermis) is treated with pulses of light. This removes sun damage and brown spots on the surface of the skin. The laser simultaneously sends heat to the deeper layers of skin to stimulate collagen. This new collagen reduces the appearance of fine lines on the forehead, cheeks and around the eyes and mouth. Immediately after treatment, a natural dressing forms on the skin to protect the treated area and prevent a wound. On day 3 or 4, this natural dressing will peel or slough off, revealing new, smooth, fresh skin underneath.

What is “social” downtime?

Downtime is the time spent recovering from a procedure. With “social” downtime, you can continue your normal daily activities. However, you may not wish to attend important social events because your face will appear pink/red and flaky for 5 – 7 days.

What can I do to prepare for this treatment?

Preparation for Pearl treatment is relatively straightforward and aimed at conditioning the skin for the treatment. The preparation is more targeted towards improving and decreasing the recovery period and optimising results. Dr Beaini is likely to prescribe you a prescription cream for this. If you have a history of cold sores, you may be required to commence an antiviral medication just prior to the procedure.

What does the treatment feel like?

Most patients describe the treatment as similar to a series of fast, hot pinches. A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin prior to treatment to alleviate much of the discomfort. Also, depending on the patient’s pain tolerance, Dr Beaini may prescribe other forms of pain medication including facial nerve blocks. An anaesthetist is available for twilight sedation if required for more aggressive treatments.

Are there any restrictions and what aftercare is required after Pearl Fusion treatment?

After treatment, the skin will look and feel mildly sunburned. You will be required to frequently soak your face with a vinegar and water solution and then apply an ointment such as vasoline or paw paw on the skin for 4 – 5days. For your convenience, Zinc Clinic will provide you with a post care kit for this period. Since you can not wear sunscreen during this time, you will need to wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure for a few days after the treatment. Once, healing is complete, you may be advised to purchase a skin care kit specifically designed to further aid with healing. Make-up may be applied at this time. To prolong the results you have achieved, a medical grade skin care regime will be recommended and tailored to your needs.

How many treatments are needed?

Pearl Fusion typically provides maximum results in just one treatment and requires 5 – 7 days recovery time. Patients with significantly damaged skin may require a second treatment.

Can Pearl Fusion be part of a combination therapy treatment?

Yes, patients may choose to have a Pearl Fusion treatment followed by separate visits for 3D Skin Rejuvenation, Titan, or injectables. Pearl treatment is often combined with Limelight/IPL to better target pigmentation. You can discuss combination therapies with Dr Beaini at consultation.

When are results noticeable?

Many patients see improvement after one week. Patients may apply make-up five days after treatment. Patients continue to notice improvement for six to twelve months as new collagen continues to grow.

Who is a suitable candidate for Pearl Fusion?

Patients with light-to-medium skin tones. Patients with wrinkles, skin imperfections and loss of fullness in their skin due to aging and sun damage.

Are there any side effects?

Patients report little or no post-treatment discomfort. After treatment, the skin may temporarily appear sunburned and slightly swollen. These effects usually disappear within 4 days. It is advised to limit sun exposure and apply ointment to the skin for four to five days after treatment to ensure a rapid recovery.

What areas of the face can be treated?

Pearl Fusion may be used on the entire face. Often Dr Beaini will administer a full face Pearl Resurfacing treatment and then apply the Pearl Fractional to the difficult to treat areas around the eyes and mouth or other areas with wrinkles, skin laxity and loss of volume.
